HST Calculator — every HST province, both directions
Add HST to a price or pull it back out of a tax-included total — Ontario's 13%, Nova Scotia's 14%, or the 15% charged in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI.
HST rates in 2026
| Province | HST rate | Tax on $100 |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 13% | $13.00 → $113.00 |
| Nova Scotia | 14% | $14.00 → $114.00 |
| New Brunswick | 15% | $15.00 → $115.00 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 15% | $15.00 → $115.00 |
| Prince Edward Island | 15% | $15.00 → $115.00 |
Note the recent change: Nova Scotia cut its HST from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025 — plenty of calculators and old invoices still show 15%. This calculator carries the current rate.
How to calculate HST, by hand
Forward: price × rate. A $250 job in Ontario carries $250 × 0.13 = $32.50 HST, totalling $282.50. Reverse: total ÷ (1 + rate). A $282.50 receipt from Ontario hides a $250.00 base — divide by 1.13 — and the $32.50 difference is your HST, the number that matters for expense claims and input tax credits.
Charge the customer's rate, not yours
The most common HST mistake in small-business invoicing: charging your own province's rate on every sale. Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, most goods and services are taxed at the rate of the province where the customer receives them. An Ontario consultant billing a Moncton client charges 15%, not 13%; billing a Calgary client, 5% GST. Select the customer's province above — and in our generator, where the same rule applies to your invoice's tax lines.
Put it straight on an invoice
HST on a compliant invoice is one clearly labelled line with the rate and your GST/HST registration number — see the CRA's invoice requirements for what else must appear at each sale amount. The “Create an invoice with this tax” button above opens our free invoice generator with the right HST line already in place — no signup, no watermark, unlimited invoices.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate HST?
Multiply the pre-tax amount by your province's HST rate and add it on. In Ontario (13%), a $100 sale carries $13.00 HST for a $113.00 total. To go the other way, divide a tax-included total by 1 plus the rate — $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00. The calculator above does both directions to the cent.
What are the HST rates by province?
Ontario charges 13%. Nova Scotia charges 14% (reduced from 15% on April 1, 2025). New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15%. The other provinces don't use HST — they charge 5% GST alone or GST plus a separate provincial tax.
What is HST exactly?
The Harmonized Sales Tax combines the 5% federal GST with a provincial portion into one tax, collected as a single line and administered by the CRA. In Ontario's 13%, for example, 5% is the federal part and 8% the provincial part — but you charge, show, and remit it as one 13% tax.
How do I remove HST from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: by 1.13 in Ontario, 1.14 in Nova Scotia, 1.15 in NB, NL, and PEI. The difference between the total and that result is the HST. Switch the calculator to “Remove tax (reverse)” and it extracts the tax from any total automatically.
Which HST rate do I charge an out-of-province customer?
For most goods and services, you charge the rate of the province where the customer takes delivery — the place-of-supply rules — not your own province's rate. An Ontario seller shipping to Halifax charges 14% Nova Scotia HST; shipping to Calgary, 5% GST. Pick the customer's province in the calculator to see their rate.
When do I have to charge HST?
Once your worldwide taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register for GST/HST with the CRA and charge the tax on taxable sales. Registration is one number for both GST and HST — the rate you apply just depends on the customer's province.
Does anything in Ontario get charged less than 13%?
Yes. Basic groceries are zero-rated at 0%, and Ontario gives point-of-sale rebates of the 8% provincial portion on certain items — including children's clothing, books, and prepared food sold for $4 or less — which are effectively taxed at 5%.
How do I put HST on an invoice?
Show HST as its own line with the rate, and include your GST/HST registration number — registered customers need it to claim input tax credits. Tap “Create an invoice with this tax” above and our free generator opens with your province's HST applied automatically.
