Rent Receipt — the record both sides need

A proper rent receipt takes a minute: tenant, address, period, amount, method, done. Free and unlimited above — built the way tax season and tenancy boards expect.

What makes a rent receipt “proper”

Any scrap of paper can say “received $1,400.” A receipt that survives a CRA review or a tenancy dispute says more: who paid, for which address, covering which period, how, and when — plus who issued it. In the generator, put the tenant in the client block, and make the line item do the legal work: “Rent — 204-31 Maple Ave — October 2026.” Add the payment method in the notes (“Received by e-transfer, Oct 1”), and the receipt is unambiguous.

The March rush, and how to skip it

In Canada, rent receipts have a season: tenants need them for provincial credits (Ontario's energy and property tax credit, Manitoba's renters credit, Quebec's Solidarity credit), for home-office claims, and for CRA reviews — so every March, landlords get the same email twelve times over. The painless pattern: issue a receipt as each payment lands (ten seconds with on-device memory), then one annual summary in January. Both formats come out of the same generator above.

For landlords: receipts protect you too

The receipt trail is two-way protection. It proves which months were paid and which weren't, documents partial payments precisely, and shows a tribunal you run the tenancy properly. In Ontario the Residential Tenancies Act requires free receipts on request — and similar rules exist across provinces — so having them automatic costs nothing and looks exactly as professional as it is. For the rest of your rental paperwork, the same tool does invoices (for damages or utilities billed back) and estimates (for work on the unit).

Free, private, unlimited

No account, no watermark, no caps. The PDF is generated on your device and never uploaded — which for a document carrying a tenant's name and address is exactly how it should be. Twelve receipts a year or one annual summary, it costs nothing either way — see also the general receipt maker for non-rent payments.

Frequently asked questions

What should a rent receipt include?

The tenant's name, the rental address, the amount paid, the payment date, the period it covers ('Rent for October 2026'), the payment method, and the landlord's name with a signature or issued-by line. The generator above carries every one of those fields.

Is a landlord required to give rent receipts?

In much of Canada, yes on request — Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act, for example, requires landlords to provide free receipts when the tenant asks, and several other provinces have similar rules; many US states require them for cash payments. Even where optional, refusing one is a red flag for everyone involved.

Why do tenants need rent receipts for taxes in Canada?

Several situations call for proof of rent paid: Ontario's Trillium/energy benefit calculations, Manitoba's renters credit, Quebec's Solidarity credit, home-office expense claims for renters, and CRA reviews generally. That's why receipt requests spike every March — issue them through the year and filing season is painless.

Do rent receipts matter for cash payments?

Most of all there. E-transfers and cheques leave their own trail; cash leaves nothing. For cash rent, the receipt is the only record either side has — date it, state the period, and both parties should keep a copy.

Can I issue one receipt for the whole year?

Yes — an annual summary receipt ('Rent received January–December 2026: $21,600, paid monthly') is common and usually what tax filings want. Issue monthly receipts as payments land, then one year-end summary; the generator's on-device memory makes the twelfth receipt a ten-second job.

Should the receipt show a partial or late payment?

Show what actually happened: the amount received, the date received, and the period it applies to — '$700 received Nov 12, partial payment of November rent ($1,400)'. Accurate receipts protect the landlord as much as the tenant when a dispute reaches a tribunal.

Is this rent receipt generator really free?

Yes — unlimited receipts, no account, no watermark. The PDF is generated on your device and never uploaded; tenant details and numbering are remembered locally so recurring receipts take seconds.
