Worth knowing: Nova Scotia's HST dropped to 14% on April 1, 2025 — older tables still show 15%. Quebec's 9.975% QST is charged on the pre-tax amount, not on top of GST, since 2013.

Three systems, one country

Canada runs three sales-tax systems side by side. GST-only: Alberta and the territories, a single 5% federal line. HST: Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, where the federal and provincial taxes are harmonized into one line collected by the CRA. Dual tax: BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec, where a provincial PST, RST, or QST is charged next to GST — two lines, both on the pre-tax price. This calculator applies the right structure automatically; for a deeper dive on a single tax, see the dedicated GST, HST, Ontario, and Quebec pages.

Charging the right province's rate

If you sell across provincial lines, the rate follows the customer, not you — the place-of-supply rules tax most goods where they're delivered and most services where the client is. That makes a national calculator practical for invoicing: select the client's province here, confirm the number, then hit “Create an invoice with this tax” and the free generator opens with that province's lines applied — every rate, subtotal, and total computed to the cent, no signup, no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

What are the sales tax rates across Canada?

Alberta and the three territories charge 5% GST only. Ontario charges 13% HST, Nova Scotia 14%, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI 15%. BC charges 5% GST + 7% PST (12%), Manitoba 5% GST + 7% RST (12%), Saskatchewan 5% GST + 6% PST (11%), and Quebec 5% GST + 9.975% QST (14.975%).

Which province has the lowest and highest sales tax?

Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon are lowest at 5% total. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI are highest at 15%, with Quebec close behind at 14.975% combined.

How do Canada's three sales tax systems differ?

GST-only provinces charge just the 5% federal tax. HST provinces merge the federal and provincial taxes into one line collected by the CRA. The rest run two parallel taxes — federal GST plus a provincial PST, RST, or QST — each calculated on the pre-tax price and shown on its own line.

Which province's rate do I charge a customer?

Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, most goods and services are taxed at the rate of the province where the customer takes delivery — not where your business sits. A Toronto seller shipping to Vancouver charges 5% GST (PST may apply separately), and to Moncton charges 15% HST.

Are provincial taxes charged on top of GST?

No. PST, RST, and QST are all calculated on the pre-tax price, alongside GST — not on the GST-included amount. Quebec ended its tax-on-tax calculation in 2013. A $100 sale in BC is $100 + $5 GST + $7 PST = $112.

How do I reverse-calculate sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate for that province: 1.13 for Ontario, 1.12 for BC, 1.14975 for Quebec, 1.05 for Alberta. The “Remove tax (reverse)” tab above picks the right divisor automatically and splits each tax back onto its own line.

How do I put the right tax on my invoice?

Pick the customer's province and every applicable line — GST, HST, PST, RST, or QST — appears at the current rate with the correct math. The “Create an invoice with this tax” button opens our free invoice generator with that province pre-selected; totals are computed automatically.
