Quebec Sales Tax Calculator — GST + QST done right

Quebec charges 5% GST and 9.975% QST, both on the pre-tax amount — a combined 14.975%. Add both taxes to a price, or reverse a tax-included total back to its base, exactly to the cent.

The two taxes on every Quebec sale

Quebec is the only province with its own separately administered value-added tax. The federal GST at 5% and the provincial QST at 9.975% are each calculated on the pre-tax price, then added together. The oddly precise 9.975% exists because when Quebec stopped calculating QST on the GST-included amount on January 1, 2013, the rate was adjusted so the total tax bill stayed the same — which is also why any calculator still doing tax-on-tax is wrong today.

Worked examples

Before taxGST (5%)QST (9.975%)Total
$50.00$2.50$4.99$57.49
$100.00$5.00$9.98$114.98

$2,000.00$100.00$199.50$2,299.50

Reverse: from a receipt total back to the base

Bookkeeping in Quebec means splitting every tax-included receipt into three numbers, because input tax credits (for GST) and input tax refunds (for QST) are claimed separately. Divide the total by 1.14975 for the pre-tax base, then take 5% and 9.975% of that base. The reverse tab above does it in one step — $862.31 becomes $750.00 + $37.50 GST + $74.81 QST.

Invoicing with GST and QST

A registered Quebec business shows both taxes on separate lines and carries two registration numbers — your GST number and your QST number. Our free invoice generator applies both lines automatically when Quebec is the selected province, and switches the whole document into French for a proper facture — see the Quebec invoice template page, or cette page en français.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sales tax in Quebec?

Two taxes apply: the 5% federal GST and the 9.975% Quebec Sales Tax (QST), both calculated on the pre-tax amount, for a combined 14.975%. On a $100 purchase you pay $5.00 GST and $9.98 QST — $114.98 in total.

How is QST calculated?

QST is 9.975% of the pre-tax price — not of the GST-included price. Since January 1, 2013 there is no tax-on-tax in Quebec. A $200 sale carries $10.00 GST and $19.95 QST, both computed on the $200, for $229.95 total.

How do I reverse Quebec sales tax out of a total?

Divide the tax-included total by 1.14975 to recover the pre-tax amount, then apply 5% and 9.975% to that base to split out each tax. For example, $114.98 ÷ 1.14975 = $100.00. The calculator's “Remove tax (reverse)” tab does this automatically.

Who administers GST and QST in Quebec?

Revenu Québec administers both taxes for businesses in Quebec — you generally register with Revenu Québec, file a combined GST/QST return, and remit both taxes to them, rather than dealing with the CRA directly for GST.

When must I register for GST and QST?

The threshold matches the rest of Canada: once taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, registration for both GST and QST is mandatory. Once registered you charge both taxes and show both registration numbers on every invoice.

Do Quebec invoices need to show GST and QST separately?

Yes — each tax on its own line with its rate, plus your GST number and your QST number. Our free generator does this automatically when you pick Quebec as the province; switch it to French for a proper facture with TPS/TVQ labels.

Do I charge QST to customers outside Quebec?

Generally no. QST applies to supplies made in Quebec — for goods shipped to another province you charge that province's GST or HST instead, under the place-of-supply rules. Selling into Quebec from outside can also require QST registration once you pass the $30,000 threshold for Quebec sales.
